Ioulia Shukan

Sociologist

Ioulia Shukan is a French sociologist, professor at the School of Higher Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, and a researcher at the Center for East European, Russian, Caucasian and Central Asian Studies (CERCEC). Her 2025 book Caring Citizens: War, Women, and the Making of the Common Good in Ukraine (published in France, in 2025) explores how Ukrainian women are carving out new roles during wartime through practices of care. Since 2022, she has been conducting research on the lives of Ukrainian soldiers after the experience of amputation, looking at forms of solidarity with people with disabilities, the functioning of medical and social services, and the challenges of building an inclusive society. She has held fellowships at the Center for Urban History and at the INDEX Institute for Documentation and Exchange, in Lviv. She is also a member of the organizing committee of the annual Danyliw Seminar in Ukrainian Studies, at the University of Ottawa, in Canada.
